The Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) is a renowned public university with a long tradition and experience in engineering and economic studies. With over 90 R&D groups, the University aims to be not only a place for the dissemination of knowledge but also a source of scientific and technological creation. These groups carry out basic and applied research in various fields. The university offers hundreds of programs, events, workshops, and language courses. The UPCT is committed to promoting research, development, innovation, and scientific exchange with numerous public and private national and international institutions, reinforcing its links with the industry world.

Its role in the project includes overseeing WP3 and conducting research on soil ecosystem services and economic evaluation. Specifically, it aims to create a conceptual framework for assessing the value of ecosystem services provided by healthy soils and the environmental impact of activities that impact soil health.

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL is one of the world’s leading institutes in organic agriculture. Their team of experts comprises individuals with extensive knowledge in various organic fields, including soil management, animal husbandry, socioeconomic aspects, food processing, and market analysis. FiBL has long been committed to the international development of organic agriculture. For research and development projects, FiBL partners with the European Union (EU), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), facilitating the development of organic and agroecological agriculture in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America in close cooperation with local partner organizations.

In the InBestSoil project, FiBL is responsible for evaluating the economic and environmental impacts of the carbon farming initiative Ebenrain in Switzerland and food system modeling to assess the Europe-wide scaling potential and effects of soil health innovations.

Wageningen University & Research, founded in 1918, is a collaboration between Wageningen University and the Wageningen Research Foundation, with the mission to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of life. The ability of Wageningen University & Research to combine the powers of specialized research institutes and the university is its greatest strength. This union of expertise leads to scientific breakthroughs that can be quickly put into practice and incorporated into education. 

WUR has remarkable soil health expertise, proved through its involvement in prestigious projects like Diverfarming, SoilValues, NOVASOIL, and Benchmarks. 

In the InBestSoil project, WUR will lead WP5, where they develop innovative business models for soil health and the co-design of new business models and strategies for enhancing soil health practices. They will contribute to the creation of living labs from current lighthouses by building on a systematic literature review of existing business models for sustainability based on the valuation of the ecosystem services delivered by healthy soils. Additionally, they will provide insights into policy implications.

The Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) is a national center of excellence for climate change research, established in 2005 that became a Foundation in 2015. The mission of the CMCC Foundation is to carry out studies and models of the climate system and its interactions with society to ensure reliable, timely, and rigorous results to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop science-based adaptation and mitigation policies. The CMCC researchers are engaged in constant research and scientific cooperation at an international scale to advance the knowledge path to mitigate the effects of climate change and to suggest adaptation measures, intervening, where required, with innovative and sustainable strategies.

In the InBestSoil project, the center will analyze the current political situation concerning soil health, develop tools and certification/labeling opportunities, and propose guidelines to introduce the economic aspect of soil health into incentives and policies. Together with another partner (Agris Sardegna – Agenzia per la ricerca in agricoltura), they will be responsible for Living Lab no.1 on Mediterranean agricultural soils.

June Communications is a marketing and communications agency that started its activity five years ago in the startup segment, later developing its service palette for SMEs and corporate companies from various industries at the national and international levels. The agency has an extensive background in the agricultural sector, collaborating with multiple companies in this field, from regenerative agriculture and carbon certification projects to agriculture insurance and financing services for agribusinesses.

In the InBestSoil project, June Communications will coordinate the communication,  dissemination, and exploitation activities, sharing the know-how for creating and issuing press releases, media articles and interviews, scientific articles, social media management and strategy, graphic content creation, and website building, contributing to increasing the project’s brand awareness.

INXENIA is a consultancy that provides R&D&I and sustainability services for the fishing industry. They have operated since 2010 and specialize in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with a track record of working on European projects. They offer certification for vessels’ carbon footprint and provide project coordination services. 

In the InBestSoil project, they will conduct Life Cycle Assessments for soil interventions, coordinate dissemination efforts, and design dissemination materials. INXENIA is the task leader for WP3 – “Economic valuation of the soil ecosystem services and the impacts of soil interventions” and WP7 – “Communication, dissemination and exploitation”. Their responsibilities include coordinating the dissemination task, conducting life cycle assessments for soil interventions in Living Labs and Living Houses, and supporting partners by designing dissemination materials.

Founded in Galicia in 2012, CVAN is a technology-based company specializing in designing, developing, and manufacturing “tailor-made” Technosols for different environmental and productive applications. CVAN has extensive experience in waste management and environmental solutions that seek to eliminate or mitigate the problems of contamination in soils and waters derived from various industrial, agricultural, or mining activities. This experience allows CVAN to participate in several R&D&I projects with national or international funding.

In the InBestSoil project, CVAN is a partner in work package 2, particularly in Light House 3, which portrays the experience in the old copper mine of Touro, where the company has been designing and developing Technosoils.

Fundación Global Nature is a non-profit organization deeply committed to protecting nature. Since its founding in 1993, FGN combines theory and practice: the elaboration of strategies and plans with field work and applied projects. Their core focus areas include preserving habitats and species, promoting sustainable agriculture and food production, and encouraging corporate responsibility. Its actions and projects are interrelated to create synergies, increase effectiveness in the use of resources, and ensure the continuity of each action line.

As part of the InBestSoil project, FGN will collaborate with various stakeholders, including farmers, land managers, non-profit organizations, and forests. Together, they will create new business models to improve soil health, evaluate forestry business models after implementation, and organize workshops. By ensuring that all projects are interrelated, FGN hopes to increase resource effectiveness and promote the continuity of each active initiative.

Since its founding in 1919, the university has continued to develop and broaden professional knowledge in agriculture and related sciences, aiming to enable high-quality education for students and agricultural experts. Thus, the faculty provides them with the latest scientific and professional knowledge and skills through quality study and lifelong learning programs. The Faculty of Agriculture is responsible for all research in agroecological fields, including primary soil management, degradation processes, cropping systems, soil and water conservation, and environmental protection, and is involved in multiple scientific and practical projects.

In the InBestSoil project, UniZG will collaborate with the stakeholders, organize field demonstrations and workshops, provide soil sampling and indicator analysis, as well as cover the study of Lighthouse 4 and disseminate information through academic papers.

Founded in 1007, Mykolas Romeris University focuses on social sciences, humanities, and interdisciplinary research on Social Innovations for Global Growth. It enrolls approximately 700 staff members and 7500 students, including 600 international degree-seeking and exchange students from over 40 countries. It is focused on becoming a sustainable, green university valuable both for the Lithuanian society and the international community. Providing international education through high-level research, the university is a member of IAU, EUA, and AUF, active in other key international organizations, and cooperates with over 200 universities and public and business entities.

In the InBestSoil project, Mykolas Romersis University involves in researching and observing the lighthouse 5, cooperation with stakeholders, indicators development, sensing analysis, and ecosystem services assessment.

Established in 1956, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” is the leading forest research center and the leader of scientific ideas in forestry and related research and development in Latvia. Scientists are involved in implementing scientific projects covering different subject areas, focusing on forests and associated ecosystems. In addition to forest-based research, LSFRI Silava scientists also research other areas of the bioeconomy, developing, transferring, and popularizing forest-based products and technologies.

The institute plays a crucial role in the InBestSoil program by offering expert insights on boreal forest soils and contributing to all work packages with its extensive knowledge. Specifically, LSFRI Silava will provide lighthouse 6, representing boreal forest soils, and contribute to implementing all work packages by sharing their vast knowledge of the forest and related ecosystems.

Ekoboerderij de Lingehof is an organic and biodynamic arable farm of 96 hectares in the Betuwe region in the Netherlands, founded in 2003. Among the first in the Netherlands to try to grow lupins for human consumption, the farm is an innovator in high-tech biodynamic agriculture and is currently trying to set a step further in regenerative agricultural practices through collaborative research.

In the InBestSoil project, Ekoboerderij de Lingehof will share its experience in the practical application of sustainable and regenerative soil management in agriculture. Its largest contribution will be in WP2, where the farm will be the main promoter of the living lab co-creation focused on regenerative practices and nitrogen-fixing crop inclusion. De Lingehof will also be involved in co-designing new business models and initiatives around soil health and communicating and disseminating the results.

Agris Sardegna is the Sardinian regional agency for scientific research and technological innovation in agriculture. The entity was founded in 2007 by merging various research institutes established in the 1950s, with the mission to promote sustainable rural development, protect and enhance biodiversity, and provide scientific support for a regional policy maker. Agris supports farmers and policymakers by producing and disseminating up-to-date scientific knowledge acquired through participation in numerous European research projects and national and regional research and innovation initiatives.

AGRIS specializes in field studies about crop management and genetic improvement of Mediterranean extensive crops (e.g., durum wheat and forages), horticulture, tree crops (vineyards, olive tree, fruit trees, cork oak), agricultural soil management and restoration, and sustainable livestock (either husbandry and genetic improvement especially for sheep and horses), forestry and aquaculture. In the InBestSoil project, Agris will coordinate Living Lab 1, conduct the LTE on conservation agriculture in Sardinia, and engage stakeholders and farmers for Living Lab 1.

LGI is an independent SME headquartered in Paris, active in more than 20 countries, with a multidisciplinary team passionate about innovation and sustainability. The company specializes in multiple sectors, such as environment and climate, low carbon energies, and intelligent & sustainable territories, participating in over 65 EU-funded collaborative research & innovation projects. It has coordinated several of these projects and regularly leads work packages dealing with the company’s areas of expertise, such as innovation management, market, exploitation, economic analyses, technology assessment, and public engagement.

In the InBestSoil project, LGI will design and develop the web collaborative platform. LGI is also involved in the stakeholder mapping for each LH/LL and in developing and implementing a stakeholder roadmap that will determine the objectives, activities, and success indicators for an effective engagement of all stakeholders involved in the project. Moreover, LGI  will research new business models for soil health and will coordinate the task regarding the exploitation and long-term sustainability plan.

Udea is a wholesaler, brand retailer, importer, and exporter of organic foods, as well as the franchiser for the Ekoplaza organic supermarket concept. Udea looks beyond organic labeling and wants to offer its customers entirely organic products. They focus on projects that strengthen our food chain and make it more transparent, in which we also point out what makes it unique. The institution focuses on supermarket chain activities, with the small specialized entrepreneurs owning an organic shop and the Out-of-Home chain clients. They try to inform the consumer about the organic products from a transparent chain, bringing back the connection between the food and the producer.

In the InBestSoil project, Udea will provide assistance in multiple work packages, with a role in disseminating information provided by the Andre Jurrius – De Lingehof farm and other project developments.

ACTYVA S. Coop. is a social economy initiative under an Integral Cooperative model, founded in 2014 to facilitate the generation of productive projects and the connections between them and their environment. With activities in different areas of the agri-food sector, ACTYVA covers the entire value chain, from food production to the transformation and distribution of ecological products. Currently, ACTYVA manages 80 ha of organically produced orchards, fruit trees, pastures, and olive groves in different regions of Extremadura, and an 80-breeding black Merino flock, breeds in danger of extinction. 

Actyva’s primary role in the InBestSoil project is collaborating with stakeholder communities for co-creation, co-innovation, and co-learning.
